I got an email offer from Network Solutions today promoting a 5-day limited-time offer on professional website design and marketing.
Since I like to stay informed on competitor pricing for the kinds of services I offer, I clicked through to see what the deal was. Turns out Network Solutions is promoting “custom” websites built by Web.com.
I know the kind of time and skill it takes to build a “custom” website for business and this sounds too good to be true.
And – in fact – it is.
When you read the fine print at the bottom of the Network Solutions email message promoting this offer, this is what it says:
*The “Save Big Today” offer for a custom website includes $344.00 in savings when you pre-pay for one year. A one-time annual payment of $1,279.95 will be billed to your credit card or payment method on file when your custom website goes live, typically within 2 to 8 business days. The annual recurring charge of $1,299.95 will be automatically billed every 12 months thereafter, in advance of each billing cycle. If you do not wish to pre-pay for a custom website one year in advance, the standard rate of service for the custom website for one year is $1,624.35 billed in installments of $124.95 every four weeks. If you want to cancel these services prior to billing, you must call us at least one day in advance prior to renewal at 1-800-333-7680. This promotion ends September 26, 2015.
Note: That’s $124.95 every four weeks — not just monthly.
Assuming the client keeps this website for three years .. the true cost is $4,873.05.
So am I saying that’s too much to pay for a website? No it’s not — if it’s bringing you more business than it’s costing you to keep it.
All I’m saying is: Don’t let yourself be fooled into thinking it’s “free.” ‘Cuz it’s not.
Next time a website design prospect suggests they can get a better deal at web.com, I’ll tell them: “No problem! I’ll be glad to meet their price!”
Lol.
